Rinzin Rinzin Vs Tempa Dorji in Lhuentse

Despite heavy rainfall, people from Jarey gewog attended the Zomdu elections to cast their votes on their lone candidate.

The gewog gave its green signal to Tempa Dorji who gave up 21 years of service from Bhutan Power Corporation (BPC) as he secured 194 ‘Yes’ votes and just 4 ‘No’ against him, yesterday during the Zomdu for National Council elections.

He has a Masters in Electrical Power Engineering from Norway and a Post-Graduate also from Norway.

Lhuentse dzongkhag has just two nominees, Tempa Dorji a civil servant from Jarey Gewog and former NC candidate Rinzin Rinzin from Khoma in Lhuentse.

Meanwhile the Zomdu election for the former NC MP Rinzin Rinzin will be held on 28 March.

Some of the voters, The Bhutanese talked to said that they are happy that they voted for the candidate as they did not have any candidate in the last elections in 2008.

In a telephone interview, 45-year old Tempa Wangdi said, “I was confident of winning as I know my Gewog will support me by casting their votes. I am happy that they have faith on me.”

On the other hand, he said he is not as happy, as the Gewog did not have a choice and they had to vote ‘Yes’. For now he looks forward to April 23 when he will have a strong opponent to compete with.

Talking about Rinzin Rinzin, he said that he is a capable candidate and he wishes him luck in the upcoming elections.

“It will be a good competition for me; people have choice and can vote for the right candidate. Winning is one thing and participation is another thing but for me participation is important. With no participation from my Gewog this year and also last year, I decided to take part,” he said.

After the Zomdu election was over, Tempa Dorji submitted all the necessary documents to the returning officer to file his nomination for the upcoming elections.

Lhuentse has eight gewogs and will complete its Zomdu on 28 March.

Five gewogs of Metsho, Tsenkhar, Minjay, Kurtoe and Gangzur have no candidates to nominate for the upcoming National Council elections.

The Zomdu election saw more number of female voters.
